The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Development Institute Scholarship

The purpose of the MLKLDI Scholarship is to invest in a graduating high school senior in Dauphin County who demonstrates leadership potential, academic commitment, and a clear desire to strengthen their community. Grounded in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s values of service, justice, and civic responsibility, the scholarship supports a student who is preparing to pursue postsecondary education, training, or a credentialed career pathway while continuing to lead with character. The scholarship is intended to reduce financial barriers to the student’s next step after graduation and to affirm a lifelong expectation of community engagement—encouraging the recipient to apply their talents to improving Dauphin County through volunteerism, mentorship, and inclusive leadership.

Criteria

  • Essay
  • Graduating high school senior from Dauphin County
  • Full time attendance at four or two year college
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Financial need
    **preference will be given to students who have participated in the MLK Day of Service
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation from:
    • Teacher
    • Guidance Counselor/Academic Advisor
    • Community Leader

Renewability: 1 year only

 

Essay

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught six principles (tenets) of nonviolence. Choose one of the six tenets that best reflects your character and leadership. In your essay, explain (1) why you selected that tenet, (2) a specific situation in which you practiced it at school, at home, at work, or in your community, and (3) how you will apply this tenet as you pursue your postsecondary plans and contribute to your community over the next 3–5 years.
