By Jennifer Doyle, President and CEO, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities

Stable housing gives people a strong foundation. Without it, daily life becomes harder and planning for the future can feel out of reach. Needs may look different from one community to the next in South Central Pennsylvania, but they are felt throughout our region.

At The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC), we believe meaningful progress begins by listening to the people closest to the need. It also requires strong local partners who understand their communities and are prepared to turn ideas into action.

That belief is guiding our growing focus on housing stability.

In 2026, TFEC is investing $100,000 in housing solutions and dedicating team resources to support this work. Across our region, these funds are helping provide emergency housing for families in Perry County, shelter for people experiencing homelessness in Dauphin County and tools to build new homes in Franklin County. We look forward to seeing how we can offer assistance in Cumberland and Lebanon Counties.

These investments are an important beginning, but we know funding alone will not solve this complex challenge. Progress will require strong partnerships and solutions shaped by the needs of each community.

Giving housing the attention it deserves also requires TFEC to make a thoughtful decision about our initiative work. After nearly 20 years, we have closed our Early Education Initiative.

We are proud of the role TFEC has played in bringing greater attention and resources to early education since 2006. Strong organizations and partnerships are now positioned to continue leading that work. TFEC will remain committed to children and families through our grantmaking and community partnerships.

Throughout our history, we have adapted and changed to meet the needs of those we serve. Your feedback and support allow us to successfully make the required changes, and we thank you for being a part of our work.
