Community support can open doors that once seemed out of reach.

For Penn State student Kastup Gaihre, scholarships made possible through The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) helped turn determination and talent into opportunity.

Since beginning college, Gaihre has received more than $30,000 in scholarship assistance through TFEC. That support eased financial pressure for him and his family and allowed him to focus on his studies during a critical time in his education.

“The financial support made a huge difference,” he said. “It removed pressure and stress so I could focus on my studies.”

Opening Doors Through Education with TFEC, Kastup GaihreGaihre moved to the United States in 2022 and joined Central Dauphin East High School midway through his junior year. Adjusting to a new country and a new school system brought challenges, but he quickly found encouragement from teachers and classmates. He embraced the opportunity and excelled in the classroom. By the time he graduated, he had earned a 4.0 GPA and several academic honors, including Best Student awards in chemistry and biology, as well as recognition in earth science and mathematics. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and volunteered at a local food bank.

Today, Gaihre is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at Penn State University, with minors in biomedical engineering and business. His interest in engineering grew from a love of math and science and from childhood experiences. Seeing how access to clean water and reliable infrastructure affects daily life shaped the kind of work he hopes to do in the future.

“I wanted to work on solutions that improve people’s lives and protect the environment,” he said.

For Gaihre and his family, the scholarship support carried deep meaning. He is the first person in his family to attend college and the oldest sibling in a large household. His success has become a source of pride for his parents and grandparents, who supported his education from the beginning. His achievements also serve as an example for younger siblings, who now see what is possible through hard work and determination.

Looking ahead, Gaihre hopes to build a career where engineering can help solve real-world problems. He is especially interested in industries such as pharmaceuticals and energy, where innovation can improve health and sustainability. He also hopes to give back to others who are starting their own journeys.

“Thank you for believing in me,” he said to the donors who made his scholarships possible. “One day I want to help students like me.”
