The funds provided to YWCA Greater Harrisburg by TFEC play a vital role in supporting victims of domestic violence, veterans and other at-risk individuals as they work to overcome homelessness. These resources help connect participants with employment opportunities through our Supported Employment programs.
YWCA’s Supported Employment programs are designed to equip individuals—particularly those who are unemployed, underemployed, homeless or facing multiple employment barriers—with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce. Our dedicated staff offer job readiness training and supportive services tailored to individuals with mental health conditions or dual diagnoses.
A key component of our Supported Employment initiative is the Dress for Success/Suits to Careers program. This program empowers clients to achieve economic independence by offering professional attire, career guidance, job training, and mentorship. Clients receive an interview suit to prepare for networking events, job fairs, and interviews. Once they begin a training program or secure employment, they can return for additional work-appropriate outfits tailored to their new roles.
How does this support assist you in advancing your mission?
For over 130 years, the YWCA Greater Harrisburg has been a cornerstone of support and empowerment in the Harrisburg community. Founded in 1894 during the Industrial Revolution, the organization was established by a group of concerned women who recognized the challenges faced by young women migrating to the city in search of work. Their mission was to provide safe, clean living conditions and access to education and activities that would help improve the lives of these women.
As the roles and needs of women evolved over time, the YWCA adapted to meet them, introducing innovative programs designed to enrich the lives of women, families, and the broader community. Today, our mission remains focused on transformative impact. We work to address the root causes of some of society’s most urgent challenges, including poverty, domestic violence, and human trafficking.
The continued support of vital community partners like TFEC enables us to expand our reach and effectiveness. Together, we help women and families gain meaningful employment and build pathways to lasting success.
“Thanks to the generosity of TFEC, we are able to provide critical support to individuals facing immense challenges—survivors of domestic violence, veterans, and those experiencing homelessness. Through our Supported Employment and Dress for Success programs, we help participants gain not only job skills and professional attire, but also a renewed sense of purpose and the confidence to thrive in the workforce. We’re proud that over 65% of our clients retain employment beyond 90 days—a strong indicator of lasting impact and stability.” Mary Quinn, CEO
